The hunter’s moon shone down on us for the annual picnic. Only sporadically, sadly, owing to the rain that was determined to drown us all! However, 52 brave souls staggered forth into the night, to be greeted with a glass of sparkling pink fizz and a jolly welcome from Tony Brooking, the chairman of our committee.
When the moment came to check on the lasagnes that were cooking in the school kitchen, to our horror we discovered the oven had gone out. A few helpful members came to help relight the oven, but were unable so to do. More kind villagers volunteered their Agas and were seen dashing home to give the lasagnes a much needed boost.
Julian Lewis was called upon to give his talk early, while the hiatus was overcome. When given the signal that he had 2 minutes to wind up his talk, because the lasagnes were about to reappear, Julian took it all in good part. He was able to continue his talk after dinner and then took questions.
The lasagnes were very well received by everyone, together with lots of salads. Puddings were a delicious assortment of apple crumbles, which had been safely ensconced in the school’s warming oven – fortunately electric, not gas ! Lashings of cream accompanied the crumbles. These were also provided by members of the village, for which sincere thanks from the committee.
The table decorations were made by Stella Strachan and the stage area was enhanced with autumn colours by Laura Bellm. It all gave a lovely splash of colour, which made for a wonderful atmosphere on such a dreary evening.
At the final reckoning, we will be giving £500 + to the Medstead branch of Riding For the Disabled, our chosen local charity.
