An interesting talk was given by Diane White with a little help from her husband, concerning the 10% of their country the Finns gave up to Russia in order to keep their independence. The Russians ruled Finland for 100 years until they declared independence after the Russian revolution in 1917.
This area which covers most of Karelia still remains in Russian hands today. Most of the population moved back to the rest of Finland but about 5% chose to stay. Due to their self-sufficiency and their very diplomatic natures they are not troubled by Russia who leaves them to their own way of life.
Finland is known as the land of forests & lakes, very beautiful, although, as the water freezes over until May also very cold at times!
It was described by Winston Churchill as ‘a valiant little nation’ again due to the ability to be diplomatic and skilful at negotiations. Very brave to haggle with the mighty Russian empire!
Finland is one of those countries most of us know very little about so we were very pleased to learn something of the way of life there. Mrs White, having family she visits, regaled us with tales of log stacking which involves the whole family!
Afterwards she answered member’s questions & we enjoyed tea & biscuits. Our next meeting is at Herriard RBL hall on Thursday 4th October at 7.30pm.
Our talk will be; Modern Slavery & Human Trafficking. All ladies are welcome to join us for what I’m sure will be a very informative evening.
