Farm Diary

The Villager

I began and ended last month’s piece with comments about the big dry after the winter’s big wet and a request for rain. It is still dry although we have had some useful rain which should keep the crops, grass and gardens growing well. ...

The Villager

I said a big dry spell would come – well it took longer to arrive than we all hoped but it is dry now with plenty of sunshine – wonderful. The last 14 days have been very busy planting the fields that should have been planted last autumn and also those originally destined for spring cropping. Everything has gone really well with excellent seedbeds and few mechanical problems. Huge thanks to Rob who has worked many hours – something over 90 hours a week. The cereals are now planted with the 80 acres of spring beans to plant next week. ...

The Villager

I hope everyone has survived the storm Ciara reasonably intact. There are a few trees down but nothing too horrendous. In spite of the rain and the wind the birds seem to be looking for nest sites and pairingup. We have various nest boxes scattered around the garden and have noticed a pair of blue tits taking great interest in one of them to the extent that they have started building a nest. …including how Boyd stopped 24 unwanted pregnancies! The more perceptive of you will have noticed it has been wet for what seems like all of this year. The figures are that since 23rd September we have received 466.5 mm (19 ins) of rain until 30th November. ...

The Villager

Thanks for the many responses to my September article – it is great to know that many do read my notes and they are apparently informative. Rainfall – 2019 is very much an average rainfall year with decent amounts falling every month. August was 69 mm (2.8 ins) with a wet spell between 6th and 19th. The 12 month rolling total is a normal 989 mm (40 ins). The driest month so far in 2019 was January 35mm (1.4 ins) and the wettest June 131mm (5.3 ins) – probably not what many would expect. ...
