The Star’s New Landlords

The Star’s New Landlords

Jan Shelley, from Mitcham, and partner Rod Kershaw, from Bournemouth, are the new landlords at the Star Inn. “It is my dream. I saw it and fell in love with the pub and the village,” said Jan. They are now busy setting up the dining room and providing high quality meals to clients. “We have a lot of work to do,” said Rod “but we have plenty of time to make it the way we want.”

The couple ran the White Horse in Alton before moving to Bentworth and the Star is their third pub in Hampshire. “We are really very happy here,” said Jan “Everyone has been very kind and supportive.”

The couple met in a pub in Sussex. Rod had lost his wife. Jan was a widow following the death of her husband from cancer. She nursed and cared for him for several years. They hit it off immediately and set about making a new life together. Rod, an ex-public schoolboy who served in the Royal Greenjackets, had a career as a surveyor and broker dealing with commercial mortgages. “I got fed up with the rat-race and I told Jan I wanted to buy a pub and she just said yes.”

The Star is still hosting the Wednesday drop-in coffee morning for villagers and the couple plan to introduce other specialist evenings including curry on Wednesdays and steak meals on Thursdays. Friday will be live music night.

Food will be available all week except Mondays and there is a fresh new menu. ”We think there is something for everyone. We have our own chef so all is fresh and of high quality.” A traditional Sunday roast is available.
