As some of you may know, I had a meeting yesterday with the new owners of the Star Inn site and we discussed at some length their proposals, bearing in mind that their first planning application has been rejected by EHDC planners.

I can confirm that Mr. Colin Phillips has, in fact, sold the pub for £455,000.00 plus stamp duty. This sale did not include the triangular piece of land in front of Mr. and Mrs. McCleary’s house (Sycamore House) to which I believe Colin Phillips retains the title.

One of the options available to the new owners is that they have the site re-valued, taking into account their considerable extra costs, with a view to re-marketing it either as a pub or as a potential development site.

I can also confirm that the Star Inn’s liabilities to EHDC have been paid in full as agreed with Mr. Phillips during the selling process.

It is fair to say that Paul Williams who is the current chairman of the new owners, has fully accepted the level of objections submitted by residents and others against the planning application. We both agreed that there is a lot to be learned by listening to local public opinion. To this end I have suggested a public consultation which is likely to take place in the school hall on either the 22nd. or 29th. June next. These dates are not fixed as there are a number of people that will attend on behalf of the developers that I am still waiting to hear from as regards their availability. Meantime could I ask you to reserve both of these dates in your diaries.

Paul and his team would like the opportunity to present the revised plans which will give us all the chance to openly discuss the proposals as they are keen to address the issues that were raised in respect of their last application.

Can I say at this stage that the public meeting is for the purposes of presenting the revised detailed planning with a view to the residents being able to speak during the question and answer session at the end. Can I also remind you that this will be a consultation and not a decision making forum. It is being facilitated by me as I would like you all to be involved in the process from the beginning, this time.

I have been asked to make it clear that the owners, ABS Developments, are an experienced residential developer working in the South East specialising in small sites of up to 20 units. These often have local sensitivities, historical significance or other issues that need to be addressed through discussion and sensible compromise with local planners and communities. They recognise The Star is one of these sites and have asked to meet local
residents to understand their concerns and hear their views. They would also like to present some Architectural and practical ideas that they hope will go some way to creating a viable development for the site whilst maintaining and addressing some of the key aspirations and needs of the community going forward.
