Garden Notes

Garden Club The Villager

I am amazed how the garden has survived such a dry spell. Now that meters have been introduced, it is important to reserve water for those things that need it. I would stretch that to things that would really enjoy it. I have watered my clematis, they would survive without extra water, but it will make them keep growing and putting on new flowers. The vegetables will get some though my snap peas are past help. Surface rooters like phlox need it. Phlox are very happy in half shade so perhaps we should think of moving them rather than supporting them in full sun. We could replace them with alstroemeria which have deep roots and come in similar colours or if you are well drained enough the achilleas will thrive. Cassis is one colour of them that would fit in and seems tougher than the others. The larger catmints would also be happy. I have an upright one called nepeta longipes. This comes in soft blues, and I have just bought one called Leeds Castle that is pale lilac. The white gaura can get quite tall if it gets through the winter. Kniphophia Ice Queen would also fit in. It comes as a surprise to those who thought the red hot pokers were only orange. ...

Farm News

The Villager

An update on my sheep notes in the May edition. The “phones” (orphan lambs) that were being fed on milk powder are now grazing with the rest of the lambs and growing well. The first draw of lambs will be made soon and sold at Salisbury market. The good weather has resulted in many lambs coming forward to be marketed, which has pushed the usual summer dip in prices to lows not seen for several years, but when an animal is ready for slaughter it needs to go. Holding them back for the higher prices in the New Year can be problematic and expensive because there are considerable costs in keeping them for another 6 months. ...

As most wildlife supporters in Four Marks and South Medstead are aware, we are self- funded. I presently work full time but have for some years also worked to support and protect wildlife in my spare time. This group evolved from a Wildlife Survey delivered to residents in 2010/11 for the Biodiversity Action Plan, which eventually became the Four Marks Community Plan. ...
