Lasham Gliding Society Winter Talks

Lasham Gliding Society Winter Talks

We are enjoying really good winter talks season with something organised every Saturday from the bonfire night party through to Easter. Non-members and members of other clubs are welcome to attend. Some dates and talks might change but listed below is the current situation. Hopefully there will be something that interests everybody.Saturday talks will normally commence at 6pm and will be held in the Brown Elephant briefing room if it is available. The talks are free of charge but as is customary, a silver collection will be made at the end of each talk for the Lasham Trust or other deserving cause. As ever, dinner will be available in the restaurant afterwards. Booking will not be necessary. The bar is also available to members and visitors.

All talks will take place at Lasham Gliding Society, Lasham Airfield, Avenue Road, Basingstoke, Hants, GU34 5SS. Telephone 01256 384900

Saturday 30th Jan – A talk by Paul Stickler on historical murders in the 20th Century and before. This is not intended as an instructional session! More info on Paul’s excellent web site:
Saturday 6th Feb – A talk by Francesco Padovano on the new gliding site that he has set up near Cuenca in Spain which offers access to some interesting and exciting new soaring opportunities. The talk will also cover the non-gliding tourist opportunities in the area.

Saturday 13th Feb – A talk by the British glider aerobatic team Principal and 4 times National Aerobatic champion, Paul Conran on getting young people into glider aerobatics.

Saturday 20th Feb – A talk on flying and Air Power by retired Air Commodore Andrew Lambert. Thanks to David John for arranging this one. Andrew used to run the Weapons Instructor School – the “Top Gun” School in US parlance – and then commanded operations in N Iraq in the late ’90s when the RAF was enforcing a No Fly Zone.

Saturday 27th Feb – Please note changed talk. (BGA Conference this weekend) – A talk by Nick Smith on fixed wing aircraft carrier operations and operating the F18 from aircraft carrier decks. Nick has been a member at Lasham and was staff tuggie a few years back. Since then, he has had a fascinating career, firstly in the Fleet Air Arm and then in the US Navy.

Saturday 5th March – Please note changed date. A talk on improving your personal performance by Dr. Al Nunn. Al is a prominent member at Lasham and has done a lot of academic research on slowing the ageing process. Something of increasing importance and relevance to many of us!

Saturday 12th March – Please note changed talk. – Colin Hales will tell us about his homebuilt KR2 aircraft and how he he is flying it around the world together with his adventures so far encountered. Thanks to Afandi Darlington for arranging this one.

Saturday 19th March – Lasham Gliding Society’s Annual General Meeting is planned for this day. This event is for members only.

Saturday 26th March – Easter Saturday – To finish off the winter talks season, a classical guitar recital by Jane Nash and Steve Grant. Both are highly accomplished guitarists. Many members will know Jane, who is also a member. Steve is a mate who lives nearby. He’s not a glider pilot and very kindly played for us last winter. His recital was very well received and it will be a pleasure to hear them again. This event is subject to it not being a 500 day. I’m sure that the audience will understand if one of the players is a little late back from enjoying some early cross country.
