Bentworth Bike Club

On the 14th July, sixteen members of the BBC (Bentworth Bike Club) together with 2 support vehicles, one driven by the husband of a cyclist and their daughter and the other containing our bags and baggage, left Bentworth to cycle to Portsmouth. We caught the overnight ferry to Ouistreham, France and then cycled along the Normandy Beaches before departing from Cherbourg 3 days later having covered approx. 170 miles. The age range of the cyclist was 16-70 and of various abilities, some wanted to add miles to the direct route and others took the easiest way. Everyone stopped to admire the views, visit some of the WW2 memorials and sup the odd coffee or glass of something local. The memorials along this part of the French coast, including the Pegasus Bridge and Arromanches, made us all stand back and think about the horrors of war and the sacrifices of not just the service men and women but also the local people who sheltered and assisted them. ...
