Services During the Interregnum

Church The Villager

The service pattern during our months without a resident priest will remain as unchanged as possible. However, visiting priests will need to be found, and all are paid, so we hope to be able to maintain the essentials – a Eucharist (BCP) at St Mary’s at 8am on the 1st and 3rd Sundays, and the 11am Parish Eucharist. There will be no midweek Eucharist – anyone wishing to go to a weekday service would be very welcome at Alton Abbey – their worship is usually at 9am. If you need transport do ring me – 562126. ...

Letter from the Rectory

Church

Dear Friends Have you ever been tempted? I came across this the other day. After starting a new diet I altered my drive to work to avoid passing my favourite bakery. I accidentally drove by the bakery this morning and as I approached, there in the window were a host of chocolates, donuts, and cheesecakes. I felt this was no accident, so I prayed … “Lord, it’s up to You. If You want me to have any of those delicious goodies, create a parking place for me directly in front of the bakery.” And sure enough, on the eighth time around the block, there it was! ...

Letter from the Rectory

Church

Dear Friends Life moves on, however much we (particularly as we grow older) might like it not to change. As more of you will be discovering, Kathryn and I will be moving on from here at the end of August and into, for us, the uncharted territory of becoming pensioners! I have been appointed as Associate Vicar (House for Duty) to the benefice of Quantock Towers in the diocese of Bath & Wells, a group of six rural parishes in west Somerset, nestling beneath the Quantock Hills, within sight of Exmoor and a mile and a half from the sea. It will, in actual fact, be more like semi- retirement; the phrase “House for Duty” means that we get to live in a clergy house rent free, as at present, in exchange for two days unpaid work each week (including Sundays), so we won’t be hanging up our collars just yet. I’m hoping that the Bishop of Bath & Wells will agree that Kathryn will be able to work within the same benefice as me on the same, entirely voluntary, basis as she does here. So, given that this is an unpaid appointment, we’ll both be claiming our pensions (though the continuing bias against men (!) means I shan’t get my state pension for a few months yet, whereas Kathryn qualifies straight away). Leaving here will be difficult, as we have both made many good friends but, as stated above, life moves on. We’ll share our new address later, when we know what the telephone number will be. ...

Fundraising Skydive for Karamoja

Church

On Saturday, 8th August 2015, I shall be part of a tandem skydive event, jumping from around 13,000 feet (2.5 miles) over Netheravon Army Airfield, Wiltshire (between Salisbury and Marlborough) on behalf of St Andrew’s Church Medstead PCC – Alton Deanery Karamoja Link Fund. I am covering all expenses but am seeking sponsorship throughout our Benefice to support our Deanery’s link with Karamoja, north-eastern Uganda, a remote and semi-arid region which I had the privilege of visiting in November 2012. ...
