14th Annual Abbey Lecture

14th Annual Abbey Lecture

Friday October 21st 2016 at 7pm to be held in Alton Abbey church, followed by supper, with wine, in the Monastery Refectory to be given by Revd Canon John Draper “Modern Christian Pilgrimage”

Whether it be to Western Wall Jerusalem, Walsingham, or Winchester, the act of Pilgrimage is becoming fashionable once more, as much as it was in pre-Reformation Christendom. The lecture will involve an encyclopaedic look at places of pilgrimage with slide illustrations, thinking about places that have become obsolete and places which are favourites. As well as this, we will consider why people make pilgrimages, how to prepare for one and how to reflect upon it afterwards. Perhaps you have never made one, in which case you should feel encouraged to do so, as it becomes part of your spiritual discipline and annual cycle of prayer and reflection.

The lecturer is a parish priest in the Diocese of Portsmouth and an Honorary Canon of the cathedral. He frequently leads people on pilgrimage and has just returned from the Holy Land in May. His new book has just been published: ‘Listening to God: tools for ministry?’
