Garden Notes – Makeover Time

Garden Club

At last this very odd summer is over. Now is the time to walk round the garden with a note book and decide what needs working on. Do the perennials need splitting? Are they in the wrong place? Has that shrub got too big? Some of my borders need a total overhaul. I like to plant things in spring on our heavy clay but as with all garden work you do it when you have time, so I shall start splitting and replanting now. The grasses resent splitting in autumn as they make their new roots in spring. Perhaps I will dig them up with lots of soil and pot them up for winter. ...

Japanese Larch Trees: Residents and walkers may have noticed signs at Chawton Park Woods with information for Japanese Larch trees in the woodland which have sadly been infected with a plant disease, Phytophthora Ramorum. This is a fungus type of pathogen which has caused extensive damage and destruction of trees and plants in the UK. It was first discovered in 2002 and thought to be of Asian origin. Trees were noted to be affected in 2009 in Devon and Cornwall. It has now spread to Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. Unfortunately there is no cure and infected trees are to be felled in order to contain the disease. Japanese Larch trees which line the main avenue and cycle route will need to be removed. ...
