Letter from the Rectory

Church

Dear Friends Life moves on, however much we (particularly as we grow older) might like it not to change. As more of you will be discovering, Kathryn and I will be moving on from here at the end of August and into, for us, the uncharted territory of becoming pensioners! I have been appointed as Associate Vicar (House for Duty) to the benefice of Quantock Towers in the diocese of Bath & Wells, a group of six rural parishes in west Somerset, nestling beneath the Quantock Hills, within sight of Exmoor and a mile and a half from the sea. It will, in actual fact, be more like semi- retirement; the phrase “House for Duty” means that we get to live in a clergy house rent free, as at present, in exchange for two days unpaid work each week (including Sundays), so we won’t be hanging up our collars just yet. I’m hoping that the Bishop of Bath & Wells will agree that Kathryn will be able to work within the same benefice as me on the same, entirely voluntary, basis as she does here. So, given that this is an unpaid appointment, we’ll both be claiming our pensions (though the continuing bias against men (!) means I shan’t get my state pension for a few months yet, whereas Kathryn qualifies straight away). Leaving here will be difficult, as we have both made many good friends but, as stated above, life moves on. We’ll share our new address later, when we know what the telephone number will be. ...

Tribute to Mary Holmes

Pubs

It is with deep regret that we bid our farewell to Mary in her retirement to a new home in Petersfield. Mary came to Bentworth eighteen years ago in April 1987 as the new manager of The Sun Inn following the departure of Richard and Jan Beaumont. Having previously owned Public Houses in Bentley and Lower Froyle she was already a very experienced Publican. Mary immediately became part of the Village and “The Sun” is widely regarded by many as a Village institution. ...
