The Villager

The weather has not been good for the bees this month. Too wet, cold and windy. Some of the hardy ones will fly but you can see them getting blown off course. I picked up my new swarm from Tadley and fed them 2 litres of sugar syrup while they found their new foraging sites. They consumed this in a day! I had to give them another load. I also gave them a new Super to make honey comb but they haven’t bothered with it. I don’t think there is enough of them to make it worth their while. Plenty enough to drink the syrup though. ...

More garden visits and more ideas. We visited Radcot House, here the planting is most unusual. Every plant was given its own space and did not touch its neighbour except the occasional drift of similar plants. Between each was a thick mulch of large sized bark. It reminded me of earlier styles of planting where each newly discovered plant would be proudly displayed. The effect was strangely calming. Like a peaceful lawn while on coming home my borders looked like a crowded London pavement. It certainly made weeding easier. Both the mulch and the ease of spotting weeds. ...

The rainfall for this year shows that, despite the few hot days we have enjoyed, it has been at least an averagely wet year so far. January 35 mm (1.4 ins, Feb 77 mm (3.1 ins), March 115 mm (4.65 ins), April 43 mm (1.75 ins), May 37 mm (1.5 ins), June 131.5 mm (5.3 ins), July 48 mm (1.95 ins) and August to date 42 mm (1.7 ins). ...
